Truth or d?
Disney movies, shows, and books teach kids lessons, and bring families together. That is what Disney is known for, but most people don’t know what Disney is known for. They’re not known for subliminal messaging, being racist, stereotypical, and most of all harmful to children. First of all, what is subliminal messaging? Subliminal means, “Below the threshold of sensation or consciousness; perceived by or affecting someone’s mind without their being aware of it”(wikipedia.com 2013). You may or may not have seen it, but Disney uses subliminal messaging and racist jokes in their movies.
Disney uses explicit and implicit racism in their films. Explicit means, “Stated clearly, and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt”(wikipedia.com 2013). Implicit means, “Implied though not plainly expressed”(wikipedia.com 2013). It isn’t as hard to spot as subliminal messaging, but you need to play close attention. Disney also uses stereotypical racism. This means the jokes are not only racist, but stereotypical too. What was Walt Disney thinking, exposing children to racism?
An example of subliminal messaging comes from the movie, “The lion king.”The main character, Simba, drops to his feet, and dust drifts up to the sky to spell “sex” in an inconspicuous way.Another example comes from “Aladdin.”Aladdin tells the princess, Jasmine’s tiger “Come on good kitty, take off and go”(Aladdin,1992). After closer looks of this scene critics discovered that a muffled character in the background says,”Good teenagers, take off your clothes”(Aladdin,1992). My last example comes from a movie, “The Rescuers.” A picture of a shirtless women can be easily spotted by anyone. Disney decided that they needed to recall this version, and cut it out. They chose to recall the movie “To keep our promise to families that we can trust, and rely on disney brand to provide the finest in family entertainment.” (Mickelson, 2007) “I feel as if i left my child with a pedophile.”(blomquist3,2007)
Adding onto subliminal messaging, Disney has racist and stereotypical jokes in their movies. For instance, in the movie, Aladdin the “bad guy” who is arabic a hooked nose, a long and skinny neck, and large feminine looking eyes that depreciate his value as a man which happens to be a typical stereotype for Arabic men. My other example comes from the classical movie, Dumbo. At the start of the movie black men are helping set up the circus. What’s abnormal about this scene is that none of the men have eyes, mouths, or noses, which implies that none of them have their own identity. They are also singing a song that goes, “We work all day, we work all night, we never learned to read or write; we work all night, we work all day; and we can’t wait to spend our pay away”(Dumbo,1941). The other example is also in“Dumbo.”Their are three black crows that are very uneducated, are always smoking, and their leaders name is Jim crow. It can’t possibly get worse, oh wait it can, they speak with southern accents, use slang, and have horrible grammar.
All in all, Disney uses subliminal messaging in their movies. Disney also uses racist jokes. There are many examples of subliminal messaging in Disney movies. There are a good amount of racist jokes in Disney movies. Disney uses subliminal messaging and racist jokes in their films.
